    About this paper

    Genkō yōshi (Japanese manuscript paper)

Genkō yōshi (原稿用紙) is the grid paper Japanese students use for essays and compositions. Text runs top to bottom in columns that are read right to left, with one kana, kanji or punctuation mark per square.

The narrow strip beside each column, 30% of the square width here, holds furigana reading aids or corrections. The spacing sets the size of each square: 8–10 mm suits learners, and smaller squares fit more characters per page.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I write on genkō yōshi?

Start at the top of the rightmost column and write downward, one character per square. Punctuation such as 。 and 、 takes its own square, and a new paragraph starts one square down.

How do I make sure the grid prints at the right size?

In the print dialog choose “Actual size”, “100%” or “No scaling”, and turn off “Fit to page” or “Shrink to fit”. To confirm, print our free calibration test sheet and measure the 10 cm line with a ruler.

Is it free for commercial use?
